🩺 2027 Medical Scheme Increases: What Stands Out?
South Africa’s seven largest open medical schemes have announced their 2027 contribution increases, ranging from 7.35% to 8.9%, with an average increase of around 8%.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Across the 2027 launches, we’re seeing a stronger focus on affordability and value, with lower increases on many entry-level and network options, alongside new options aimed at younger members, families and those looking to manage costs.
There’s also a growing emphasis on prevention and proactive healthcare, with schemes expanding wellness rewards, mental health and chronic care support, while introducing better digital tools to help members access and manage their benefits.
At the same time, medical inflation continues to run well ahead of everyday inflation, driven by factors including provider costs, greater healthcare utilisation, ageing membership and more chronic illness.
The takeaway? Don’t look at the contribution increase alone. With benefit structures, networks and co-payments also changing, it’s important to understand what your medical scheme option will actually offer you in 2027.
