MOMENTUM MEDICAL TARIFFS 2016
Dear General Practitioner
Momentum Health Scheme Rate for 2016
Thank you for partnering with us in 2015. Your on-going support in 2016 will help ensure the provision of world class healthcare to our members.
We would like to confirm the increase in the reimbursement rates for 2016, which will be effective from 1 January 2016. The standard GP consultation rate (tariff code 0190) will be R323. Through our on-going quarterly profiling process, practices who qualify and comply can earn an additional R60 or R30 per consult, subject to being a Category 1 or 2 GP respectively. Your practice will receive a separate communiqué, should you qualify for this benefit.
For any other procedure, Momentum Health will be increasing the general Scheme Rate by 5%. This increase will be applicable on the current rate payable for procedures, and can be viewed on our website at www.provider.momentum.co.za.
Dispensed medicines and consumable products used as part of in-room procedures will be reimbursed as follows:
- All dispensed medicines (including unscheduled) are priced according to the SEP / List Cost Price + 30% to a maximum of R23.40 per item
- All unscheduled consumable products (0201) used during procedures are priced according to List Cost Price + 31% mark-up
- All scheduled consumable products (schedule 0 to 8) used during procedures are priced according to SEP + 30% to a maximum of R23.40 per item.
We thank you once again for being the custodians of our members’ healthcare, and wish you and your staff all the best for 2016.
Kind regards
Dewald van Jaarsveld

Discovery Premiums Massive Increase in 2017
Discovery Health has announced its new premiums for 2017, which are set to increase between 7.8% and 14.9%.
The average premium increase across Discovery Health’s plans are 10.2% – significantly higher than last year’s 8.6%, and even higher than the forecast CPI of 6.8%
The increases for individual Discovery Health plans are as follows:
- Executive and Comprehensive: 11.9%
- Coastal Core: 14.9%
- Coastal Saver: 7.8%
- All other plans: 9.9%
According to Milton Streak, Principal Officer at Discovery Health Medical Scheme, most of their members will see an increase of 9.9% or lower in 2017.
Discovery Health is the biggest medical scheme on the open market with over 2.7 million members. The group warned earlier this year that premiums would be going up due to significantly higher claims than in previous years.

Medical Scheme / Healthcare Finance Numbers
MEDICAL SCHEME NUMBERS
Statistics from last year’s annual report from the Council for Medical Schemes provide valuable context to the NHI debate.
- Out of a population of about 58 million, about 9 million South Africans, or fewer than one in six, are covered by a medical scheme.
- Gross medical scheme contributions for the 2017/18 year were about R180 billion, which equates roughly to R20 000 per beneficiary for the year.
- Gross expenditure by medical schemes for the 2017/18 year was about R175bn, or about R5bn less than contributions received. (Schemes have other sources of income, including investment income.)
- Of the gross expenditure, about R160bn (91%) was on health-care costs and R15bn (9%) was on non-healthcare expenditure.
- Of the non-healthcare expenditure, about R12.5bn (83.7%) was for administration costs and about R2.2bn (14.5%) was on broker fees and distribution costs.
WHAT THE NHI BILL SAYS
Here are the salient points of the bill as tabled, as it applies to you, the user:
- Its purpose is to establish an NHI Fund, funded through “mandatory prepayment”, that aims to provide sustainable, equitable and affordable universal access to “quality healthcare services” by acting as the single payer and single buyer of such services.
- Services and products will be sourced from accredited and contracted providers.
- It will apply to all health establishments, excluding military ones.
- It will cater for the healthcare needs of South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, prison inmates, and certain categories of foreign visitors.
- Asylum seekers and illegal immigrants will be entitled only to emergency services and services for “notifiable conditions of public health concern”.
- It will cover all children, including those of illegal immigrants.
- You will have to be registered and you will be issued with an NHI card, which you will have to present on receiving healthcare services.
- To register, you will have to provide an identity card or birth certificate, photograph, proof of residence and biometrics, such as fingerprints.
- You will have the following rights:
– To receive the service free at the point of care from an accredited provider.
– To be treated within a reasonable time period.
– To not be refused access or unfairly discriminated against.
– To have access to information relating to your health as kept by the fund.
– To be treated with a professional standard of care.
– To make reasonable decisions about your health care.
– To complain about a service provider or service by the NHI Fund, or appeal a decision made by the fund. - You will have to go first to a primary healthcare service (such as a clinic or general practitioner) in order to be referred, if necessary, to a specialist or hospital. If you do not follow the prescribed referral pathway, you will not have access to the healthcare system.
- The bill provides for complementary voluntary services not covered by the NHI Fund. For these services, you will have to pay directly or use a medical scheme or other private health insurance.
Cheap COVID AntiBody Test
Here’s how much the antibody test will cost you – excluding your doctor’s consultation fees:
- Ampath: R230
- Pathcare: R224.10 (24-hour turnaround time in Gauteng and Western Cape, 48 hours elsewhere)
- Lancet: R230 (24 hours from sample arrival in Johannesburg)
You can now get a Covid-19 antibody test for R230, with results in 24 hours
- All major pathology labs in South Africa are now offering Covid-19 antibody tests, with some promising results in 24 hours.
- These tests are significantly cheaper than the PCR test, but they’re not indicated for everyone.
- You’ll still need to visit your doctor for a referral though.
- For more stories visit Business Insider South Africa.
Three of South Africa’s leading private pathology labs are now offering Covid-19 antibody tests – after a lengthy approval delay by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
The recently-approved antibody tests are significantly cheaper than the gold-standard of reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, which tests for active infections.
