What is Chronic Disease List CDL
A CDL, or Chronic Disease List, is a specific list of chronic conditions for which South African medical schemes are required to cover treatment as part of their Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) cover. This cover includes diagnosis, treatment, and medicine for conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. The CDL ensures a minimum standard of care for members with these conditions.
What the CDL covers
-
Mandatory coverage:Medical schemes must cover the 27 CDL conditions, including an additional 18 PMB conditions.
-
Treatment basket:The coverage includes a “treatment basket” of consultations, tests, and procedures for both diagnosis and ongoing management.
-
Funding:Approved medications are covered, often without an annual financial limit, as long as they are within the scheme’s established protocols and formularies.
